T first I thought that contemporary knowledge of the events and players in the Pacific during WWII would remove the suspense from this particular series of books. Almost any school age child knows we lost Wake Island, that Guadalcanal was a rough fight and that Jimmy Dolittle bombed Tokyo. The Story, as told by Mr. Griffin, actually plays into the fact that most Americans know the results and thus he concentrates more on the characters and manner of how the events occurred rather than the actual events themselves that gives the story a fresh and different element of suspense-how and why things occurred as they occurred. One of the elements of Mr. Griffin's books that I like best IS his characters. When the Brotherhood of War series ended I felt somewhat as I did the year my favorite soap opera was cancelled-like I had almost lost a best friend. That said, this series of books- and particular this "chapter" of the story of the Marine Corps during WWII- reminds me of interesting combinations of well-loved friends- The Mouse, the Duke and the Pollock. The primary role is that of Naval [former Marine corporal] Fleming Pickering, Chairman [and with wife and son] sole stock owner of Pacific & Far East Shipping. Attractive, "comfortable" and used to being in command he is selected by Sec Defense Frank Knox to proceed to Pacific Theatre and putting his shipping experience to work as a cover, he is tasked with cutting through the Cincpac [ Navy vs Army] MacArthur rivalry and giving the Sec. of the Navy the real truth. Thus we find a blend of Lowell [ "comfortable & used to seeing that things get done best and efficient] with Felter [right-hand-of-God- power no one can override] but because he is not in his natural element- he is a Navy Captain who used to be a WWI Marine Corporal who left the military until "the day of infamy" he isn't always sure of the processes and is untainted by the rivalry addding a wisp of uncertainty and unexpected behavior. As in Brotherhood- with its "Gone Greek Group" of characters, there are Marine Corps connections between many of the central characters within this series as well s they meet and develop associations through the work: serving in "the wood" during WWI; that makes the needed back channel mechanisms very credible. Other Connections that are eluded to and will no doubt be developed in later chapters are Old China 4th Marines, and the growing relationships between the sons and younger generations who entered service for the first time; a reversal of the first several chapters in the Brotherhood series where the primary focus was on the Officers of WWI who influenced the WWII Brotherhood. This book begins with the "after" Pearl Harbor Attack and ends with the beginning of the planned invasion and repelling of Japanese from Guadalcanal. It Touches a bit on MacArthur and the move to Australia, the "Palace Guard" which I am reasonably sure will be a conflict vehicle for Pickering's operations much like the West Point Protection Assn and the Cincinnati Flying Club served in Brotherhood. Co-Stars Steve Koffler and Mr. Howard find themselves teamed up and Banning and Steckler sr have vital roles in this chapter of the Marine Corps. Steve is one of my favorites. From his "ferocious Mouse" attitude about being a Marine; to his baby face & scared but is more afraid to show it mind-set he plays the vital character of most young Marines. He is a ham radio operator and expert but hid that fact from the Corps because he didn't want to end up as a company typist. He and Joe Howard find themselves on a coast watcher island that no doubt will be a central theme of the next chapter "Battlefield" as the fight for control of Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands develops.

I found my first WEB Griffin book when stationed overseas in 1983. Every since then I have gone out of my to purchase his books. This series is about the Marine Corps starting pre WW II, the characters and situations are described in a manner that you feel like you are right there with them. Must read for anyone that wants to get immersed in a storyline.
I have found WEB Griffin Corp series along with his others books on Military services very well done and history of his use of original facts to be very education and very good reading. This is the 3rd time I have read this series in the last 10+ years as I have read the others.
I hope others enjoy them as much as I do.

Another great book in the series, excellent continuation of the story line with great continued character development. The historical development is great and the story moves at a really good pace keeping you involved and wanting more!
A great read. Great storytelling. Rich characters.

This is great storytelling, but read this book as part of the “Corp” series which starts with W E B Griffin’s book Semper Fi. The series is Griffin’s best of his many series. If you like good, well told stories with great multidimensional characters, this is the series for you.
This third installment in Griffin's "The Corps" series is something of a launching pad for the later novels, but is a terrific read and quite engrossing for all that. In this one Griffin introduces several new characters who will obviously feature prominently in future novels in the series.

This one is about the first desperate days in the Southwest Pacific, when a Japanese invasion of Australia, New Zealand, or even Hawaii itself was far from impossible. Until Midway, and even for some time thereafter, the Americans are mostly getting the worst of it until the American invasion of Guadalcanal. This turns into a bitter contest of national wills between the United States and Japan, and nowhere were the guts, professionalism, and toughness of the Marines needed worse. This forms the backdrop of a fascinating novel that I could not put down. Highly recommended. RJB.
COUNTERATTACK (book 3) is a continuation of SEMPER FI (book 1) and CALL TO ARMS (book 2). Since it is a sequel, reading the first two novels is necessary to get a full grasp of COUNTERATTACK. It is not, however, as good as the first two. Familiar characters from the first two books remain and new characters are introduced.

COUNTERATTACK is mostly about non-combat events in the US and Australia. One of the storylines is the creation of the Para-Marines. “Scumbag” Lieutenant R.B. Macklin involvement in the Para-Marines is reminiscent of David Schwimmer portrayal of Captain Sobel in BAND OF BROTHERS.

Three books down, seven more books to go.
Like most of WEB Griffin's books this is terrific. The Corps, Brotherhood of War and the Brotherhood of the Badge (until "co-written" by Butterworth the son") are all well worth reading. I have at least one hard copy of the aforementioned series and one to two e-copies. (Kendal and or Nook) yes there are some glitches. Complete mistakes and an amazing " time warp" in the case of the Brotherhood of the Badge series and Griffin is a "formula" writer. But the books are entertaining. Characters are likeable, well developed, and the subject matter is engrossing. If you like WEB Griffin you will HATE anything co-written by Butterworth. Word of advice enjoy Griffin, stay away from Butterworth. I would have liked to know what happened to Pick, McCoy and all the others before Griffin stopped writing. If Butterworth attempts to continue the series I will just have to keep wondering. I have waisted too much money trying to read the trash he attempts to put out.
