Chris Van Allsburg never ceases to amaze me! I LOVE all of his books because he sucks the reader into the story and then throws a great surprise in the end. My students love his books as well and there is always an amazed uproar at the end as we discover his twist or surprise. One of the things I especially love about this book is that Sweetie Pie offers kids an opportunity to look through the lens of an animal, to gain another perspective that they might not otherwise think about or consider. Totally relevant for my students as we were learning about endangered animals. Love it! Keep the books coming, Chris!

I usually love the stories in Chris's books, and look forward to his newest work. This is a disappointment. The way he usually weaves story details into the art and the twists in the plot are what make him award winning. Neither is up to his usual offering. After Queen of the Falls, all his earlier work...
Another wonderful book by Chris Van Allsburg!
Slightly strange pictures of the faces of some of the children. however, the story is gripping for young (4's, 5's and 6's) children.
We love all Chris Van Allsburg's books. This isn't the best, but it's still great. The art is a different format for him too.
Some worrisome tails in this story. I got the message that children aren't very nice to animals.
Lots of drama, much more than one would expect from a pet rodent story. Emotional study of the experience of being a young child's pet. Compelling drawings as always in Allsburg's works!
This book would be good for teaching many different story elements to children. For example, "personification" could be taught as Sweetie Pie has human like traits and feelings. Empathy could be taught as we can see through the eyes of Sweetie Pie. Theme can be taught as we can learn many things from the book such as "It is important to care for our animals." I thought this book was above average. It made your think for a moment that Sweetie Pie was dead. You can then infer that he was saved by his Chipmunk friends. You may also infer that they learned to open his cage when they were watching him through the window. It may not be as outstanding as his other books, but it is still a book that has great value. If you consider how many people treat their pets, this book is right on target. This books lends itself to many discussions. I would recommend this book.
