I really enjoyed reading this book as it asks the reader to look beyond the normal Mount Rushmore of Lean and see that just because someone got published first / were popular with executives or professors doesn't always make them right. I viewed the questions as a way to wrap up the focus of the chapter and as a way for me to expand my critical thinking. I don't have to agree with every critique but it does help in getting you to investigate why you think the way you do and that is always better.Product details

Critique of Lean Pathway to Improvement Bob Emiliani 9780989863179 Books Reviews
Critique of Lean provides real insight into how lean can be adopted and managed poorly, and then abandoned in many companies. It's an important read if you want to challenge your current Lean Paradigm.
This book was deceptive for me.
I’m not a lean expert (fake or real), but I thought that a “Critique” would give me clues about what mistakes I should avoid in my lean journey, especially with the subtitle “Pathway to Improvement.” But the 186 pages critique can be summed on Prof. Emiliani words, as the “slowness to recognize new, relevant information and slowness to take action based on the new information” (page 128), and that’s all. The author’s central point is “why it took Jim Womack and Daniel Jones so long to get into the right path?” From author’s perspective, their late recognition (?) of “Respect for People” as a pillar of “real-lean” is responsible for all failed lean initiatives (?).
The sarcastic and sometimes aggressive tone against LEI (Lean Enterprise Institute) and LEA (Lean Enterprise Academy) with exhaustive citations of Womack and Jones papers and interviews, long lists of rhetorical questions, and why LEI and LEA are “fake-lean” are fatiguing. It reminds me Dr. Myron Tribus image of “rearview mirror management” for managing by monthly reports or managing by objectives. Freud would ask about a “narcissist rage”.
I finished the book with the feeling I get when I arrive late to an appointment and I have to spend the whole night justifying why I arrived late, why I arrived late last year, and late again the other year in an endless moaning.
Few good points of the book are obscured by this crusade on Womack and Jones works. Deeper understanding of Frederick Taylor’s ideas is completely bewildered by pointing fingers against the called “fake-lean”.
The author’s knowledge and practice named as “real-lean”, and justified by an extensive Appendix, is eclipsed by the “fake-lean” aggressive drift throughout the book.
