Although I appear to be in the minority on this, for me, "Aaron's Wait" was a sharp step down from the first entry in the Elliott Smith mystery series. In this effort, Elliott is again joined by John, the ghostly voice in his head, to solve a suspicious death. Elliott's real life relationship with his boyfriend Steve is progressing nicely and he's got a new house to renovate. But so much of the story is lengthy exposition that it gets tedious. For every action taken by Elliott, we get to hear what he thinks about that action and what we feels about he thinks. Plus, his feelings are often conflicted over his thoughts and actions so it gets to be too much. Certainly character development is one of the hallmarks that separate a good mystery from one that is merely well plotted, but enough already.

As for the core mystery, Elliott goes through the motions of finding out about the list of suspects and such detection covers a tiny percentage of the novel. Then, without any warning, he literally wakes up one day with a theory of the crime based on information that was readily apparent early on. Everything is wrapped up pretty quickly after that. So if you're looking for a twisting mystery with red herrings and amateur detection, you won't find it here.

I'm a fan of Dorien Grey and own every one of his books. But I hope the next entry in the Elliott Smith series offers a tighter, more interesting mystery and less conflicted feelings from the protagonist about solving it.

I really enjoyed the second installment in this series. I like the building of the characters and I enjoyed the "coincidences" in the mystery that lead to the ending. I love to watch Dorien's unfolding of his characters in his novels. They don't magically work everything out in one book but grow over time to create a realistic whole. I look forward to the next one to see where we go from here.

What a sad and wonderful story. Loved the mystery and characters. A bit slow at times but kept me interested so no complaints. As for Elliot and Steve's relationship, it's like watching snail porn. Nothing seems to be happening there. Maybe it will pick up in book three but some how l doubt it. And yes, l am aware that the romance is not the theme of the book which is why l gave it five stars for the mystery. I kept going back and fourth about who the suspect was till Elliot knew for sure, and l loved that about the story very much. Highly recommended. On to book 3, Caesar's Fall.
Elliot and "corporeally challenged" John are one of the most peculiar team of sleuths ever appeared in mystery literature. Elliot's new building renovation project hits a snag...a tenant who won't go away and Aaron,a pathetic ghost who's waiting for his departedlover, Bill. Apparently Bill has killed himself, but there's something fishy, there... and Elliot and John will have many suspects to consider, a bit desperate business partner, an homophobic brother, a stalking ex boyfriend, all having a possible motive. Paranormal and oordinary reality mix deliciously, in this really original novel, showing detailed characters' development and a puzzling mystery. But what's wonderful are the consultations between Elliot and John, filled with sensibility and uncanny humour,and, as John says "I can go to the Beyond whenever I want, and since I can't come back I'm in no no hurry"
Let's hope so, since we look forward for other stories of the oddest of sleuths pair!
I bought this book thinking that I am buying the first Eliott Smith mystery and instead it turned out to be second one. My conclusion is that it stands well enough on its own, although it will definitely help to read the first book to understand the initial setup of how Elliott and John came to be I guess and I am sure to see some character development.

So, I loved this one, I used to love mysteries, but at some point read too many of them and almost stopped reading, that means that I am not a good judge of how well the mystery angle was crafted. I know that I did not figure out the villain right away, but that does not mean that more experienced mystery readers will not feel differently. But I definitely enjoyed the story, I loved how smooth it was moving forward, I loved the "not over the top" writing, I enjoyed the main character tremendously. I was cheering for him to develop his relationship with Steve further, but I think that slow is very appropriate for these books. I sympathized with his unwillingness to lie to Steve, but also worries about what Steve will think of him if he will share about John.
I read this book without the benefit of having read the first in the series. As many have commented, it stands alone very well; however, it would definitely have helped knowing the backgrounds of the characters and their relationships. I plan on reading the first (except, strangely, it's not out in version).

Elliot Smith is an independently wealthy man in his 30s who restores old buildings. The problem with his newest renovation is that there is a ghost (Aaron) who will not leave the premises until Elliott is able to solve the mystery of what happened to Aaron's lover/partner, Bill. Aaron is haunting the newly renovated building that Elliott is wanting to sell and, therefore, he realizes that Aaron won't allow him to sell until Bill's mystery is solved. It would appear that Bill just left their house one day and never returned. Aaron died shortly thereafter--before he found out what happened to Bill. To say anymore would risk ruining for others.

This is a fun read. Although the plot gets a bit complicated, it's not a difficult read at all. There is something very comfortable and engaging about the characters and their interaction. To me, this is not a gay book. This is a mystery where the main characters happen to be gay. There is some occasional sexual innuendo but nothing that would offend the "run of the mill" straight reader (in other words, not for the Rush Limbaughs of the world). I heartily recommend.
