In all of her long life, Desdemona Albrecht never thought that she would have to rely on a scrawny kid with a penchant for marijuana.
Andy Ballston uses a wide array of mind altering substances as he tries to find true love. From the innocent caffeine punch of a double tall latte, to the gut wrenching double shot of well grade tequila, Andy keeps tossing them back to ease his pain.
If you never thought that bullfighting and Battlestar Galactica would be mentioned in the same sentence, let alone the same book, you'd be wrong on both counts!
It's a lively romp through Seattle, Los Angeles, Mexico and even the fourth dimension as you follow this unlikely cast of characters as they try to get from one day to another.
You'll be entranced by the magic that is woven throughout the story, and you just might want a shot of tequila yourself by the time it's all through.

Okay, it was cute. Though I personally didn't like the character development I gave it four stars because I liked certain aspects of the story a lot and he gets points for being unique. I thought it was laid back and some parts were pretty funny. If you're just looking for a funny story and a cute read, it's a perfect book for you and I really loved the title. As you're reading you follow several different stories about several different groups of people until the moment when the puzzle pieces fall into place. The author was able to tie everything together in the end but I think he waited a little too long to do it, but if you stick it out, I promise you it will bring light to the whole situation.Product details

Cheap Tequila A Funny Urban Fantasy eBook John Poetzel Reviews
This books is a fast fun read filled with a Seattle bike messenger, a witch, and a minute minute toreador. There's plenty of jokes, and magic along the way.
I read this entertaining urban fantasy on a trip from Florida to Washington State. The book saved me from nonstop inane chatter of the woman in the seat next to me. I was sucked into the book, into the characters lives and for the entire flight I was fully entertained. The next flight I finished the book and then opted to give it to my bookless chatty neighbor to shut her up. This worked well and she promised to mail the book back to me when she finished it. She must have enjoyed the book as well because she was quiet for almost the entire flight, a total win for me. The only time she talked she commented that the author either enjoyed some medicinal herb or had a very vivid fantasy life. Sadly, she kept the book. I must assume that she really enjoyed it.
The author, Mr. Poetzel, has a vivid fantasy life indeed! I look forward to reading his next urban fantasy.
I read this book without a single clue as to what urban fantasy is all about, so I can't speak to that aspect with any knowledge. What I found was an clever blend of normal daily life and magic. Maybe that's the urban fantasy part. As for funny, I found the entire story to be wound tightly with a slick, wry attitude that did an excellent job of cushioning the characters from the reality (or unreality) of their particular struggles. It was only rarely a laugh out loud funny for me, but it kept me smiling and nodding at the absurdity of it all. The best part was the author's capturing of the Seattle vibe. The characters were crafted from a range of iconic Seattle ideals that didn't blend as much as keep the personalities bouncing off of each other in a nice display of how life works itself out in a clever world of noisy misunderstanding. Unlike many indie stories, the editing was tight. I only spotted a few editorial issues. All in all, for 99 cents, this is a bargain of lighthearted, clever, and fast moving entertainment.
John Poetzel does an excellent job weaving the somewhat odd characters of this novel into a story that will keep you reading and laughing from cover to cover. My copy of the book arrived in the mail and I made the mistake of leaving it on the coffee table to read the following night. I came home from work, excited to read my new book, only to find that my husband had started reading it and wouldn't give it up until he was finished!
I spent my teenage years growing up in Seattle and it was fun to take a stroll down memory lane while reading Cheap Tequila ~ The Queen Anne Hill Counter Balance, Dick's Drive Inn and their ketchup containers, The Space Needle and Seattle Center... And now when I'm driving through downtown Seattle I had even greater respect for the bicycle messenger services that tackle the 20 degree hills with effortless ease!
My favorite part of the book was how each chapter seemed to end on a bit of "cliff hanger" making it difficult to put down. My only hope is that there will be a sequel someday! It seems that there should be more adventures to come for the little black cat and her mistress...
If you're looking for an easy read, this is it. Granted, it's not "Thought provoking" but it was a fun poolside read.
I'm not sure what makes this an "urban fantasy." It's sort of 3 surreal stories that coalesce. I found the characters interesting but somewhat stereotypical. This is one part travel saga, one part modern day Bewitched and one part romance. A good beach read or travel book. I found the story fun but not actually funny. I had expected a laugh along type story but for me, it was amusing but not hysterical. I would recommend this for twenty-somethings who enjoy making fun of their own generation.
